‘Abd, ‘Abid
(pl. ‘IBAD; ‘ABIDON) a slave or servant usually referring to the person who serves God Almighty “abdullah”,
Adhan
Adhan is an Islamic way of calling Muslims to the five obligatory Prayers. The Adhan is announced daily from the Mosques. It’s meaning is God is the Greatest (repeated 4x) I testify that There is no deity except The One God (2x) I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of God (2x) Come to the Prayer (2x) Come to the true success (2x) God is the Greatest (2x) There is No deity except The One God (once)
A.H.(After Hijrah)
Hijrah means emigration. The Islamic calendar starts from the year Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) migrated from the city of Makkah to Madinah, in 622 C.E. i.e. common era
Ahl al-Bait
Literally means ‘the people of the house’, a polite form of addressing the members of the Prophet’s (PBUH) family, including his wives, children and grandchildren. His Family are naturally some of the closest people to the Prophet (May the Peace and Blessings of God upon them all).
Ahlu-Dhimmah
The non-Muslim subjects of an Islamic state who have been guaranteed protection of their rights as citizens of the state. These rights include life, property, and practice of their religion, etc. in return for a yearly tax (Jizya)
Ahl al-Hadith
Refers to the group of scholars in Islam who pay special attention to ‘Hadiths’, and tend to interpret the revelation literally. The term has also come to be used lately for a group of Muslims who are close to the Hanbali school in theology, and claim to follow no single school on legal matters, also referred to as “Salafi”.
Ahl al-Kitab
literally ‘People of the Book,’ refers to the followers of Divine Revelation such as the Jews and Christians. Note this doesn’t mean that the Bible or Torah today is pure divine revelation, but much of it is intact. Whereas the Hindu books are not ascribed to any Prophet and generally don’t agree with the Qur’anic monotheism.
Ahmad
Ahmad is another name of Muhammad (S.A.W.). See Holy Qur’an, As-Saff (61:6). See Muhammad for more details. It also refers to one of the great scholars of Islamic law Ahmad ibn Hanbal whose followers designed a whole methodology of Jurisprudence based upon his teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah
Al-Akhirah
(After-Life, Hereafter, Next World). the term embraces the following ideas-
That man is answerable to God. That the present order of existence will some day come to an end. That when that happens, God will bring another order into being in which He will resurrect all human beings, gather them together and judge them That those who are reckoned will either go to Heaven or Hell. That the real measure of success or failure of a person is not the extent of his prosperity in the present life, but his success in the next.
AL HAMDU LILLAHI or AL HAMDU LILLAHI RABB AL ‘ALAMIN
Praise and thanks to ALLAH, Lord of the universe (said at the termination of any activity) .
Allah
The word “Allah” can be translated into english as “The One God”. It is an Arabic word with a rich meaning, denoting the only one who is adored in worship, who created all that exists, who has priority over all creation, who is lofty and hidden, who confounds all human understanding. It is exactly the same word as, in Hebrew, the Jews use for God (Eloh), the word which Jesus Christ used in Aramaic when he prayed to God. God has an identical name in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Allah is the only God and if anyone who says they are Christian or Jew but they don’t believe in Allah, just ask this person why Christian and Jewish Arabs say Allah when referring to Almighty God or why the Arabic bible is using the word Allah to refer to God.
“He is Allah, the One, self-sufficient; He begets not, nor is He begotten, and there is none like unto Him.” (The Holy Qur’an, chapter 112, the chapter describing Him)
Allahu Akbar
Allah is the Greatest.
Allahummah
The invocational form of ALLAH used in supplication i.e. Oh God!
Amirul Mumineen
Commander of the faithful. Title of the political leader of the Islamic State after the death of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Umar and Ali were known with this title. May God be pleased with them
Ansar
Ansar means; the Helpers. (singular: Ansari). In Islamic terminology, this word refers to the Muslims of Madinah who helped the Muhajirin (immigrants) of Makkah in the process of the latter’s settling down in the new environment. They were the second faction of the great Companions of the Prophet (pbuh)
Aqeeda
Literally means belief. In Islamic terms, it refers to the general beliefs of a Muslim which are taken from the Qur’an and the Sunnah and mostly revolve around the six articles of faith:
1. Belief in Allah, the One God.
2. Belief in Allah’s angels.
3. Belief in His revealed Books.
4. Belief in His messengers.
5. Belief in the Day of Judgement.�
6. Belief in Fate and the Divine Decree.
Arafat
Arafat is a site of the Muslim pilgrimage, about 25 kilometers east of Makkah. Standing on Arafat on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah and staying there from mid-day to sunset is the essence of the Hajj (the Pilgrimage). The pilgrims supplicate the Almighty in Arafat from dusk till dawn on the last day of Hajj
Ahl al-Suffah
Ahl al-Suffah consisted of about three or four hundred generally poor Companions who spent most of their time in the company of the Prophet (S.A.W.). They acquired knowledge and had dedicated themselves wholly to serving Islam. The most famous of which was Abu Hurairah who narrated thousands authentic Hadiths. Many from the group known as sufi’s claim that their name comes from ahle-suffah. That could be correct for those sufi’s who follow the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad as did ahl al-suffa.
‘Asr
‘Asr is the late afternoon Prayer, the third compulsory Prayer of the day. It should be prayed between mid-afternoon and a little before sunset. It is also the name of chapter 103 of the Holy Qur’an.
As-salamu Alaikum
Assalamu ‘Alaikum means ‘Peace be on you’ and is the greeting of the Muslims. The response to this greeting is ‘Wa ‘Alaikum Assalam,’ and on you be the Peace. This greeting is a supplication for the peace of God to be upon that person.

Ayah means a wonder, miracle, or sign which directs one to something important. In the Qur’an the word has been used in four different senses:
(1) sign or indication
(2) the phenomena of the universe
(3) miracles performed by the Prophets
(4) individual units (i.e. verses) of the Book of God
