Defining Hope.

Assalam alaykum,
Hope is what is associated with effort and deeds, or else it is only a wish... hope emanates from a state of certainty (Yaqeen). True hope drives effort and endeavour in performing deeds, because he who hopes for something will try to attain it, otherwise it is just a worthless wish without effect.
In the Hadith, we find it that: "The courteous (the wise) is he who judges and condemns his self and works for what follows death, and the helpless is he who lets his self follow its affections, and wishes for desires from the Lord". And Al-Hasan Basry, may Allah be Merciful to him, said: "there are people who were deceived by wishes of forgiveness till they exited the world devoid of a single good deed [hasana]. One of them would say: I have expected well of my Lord!! then he is a liar. If he had expected good, he would have done good deeds". Then he recited Almighty's Sayings:--
"AND THAT SUPPOSITION OF YOURS WHICH YOU SUPPOSED
OF YOUR LORD HAS RUINED YOU. SO YOU HAVE BECOME
AMONG THE LOSERS". (41:23)
