Nuclear reactions in the sun 5(10)
The various images that NASA captures of our sun show a fiercely blazing body, one in which fuel is constantly burning.  That fuel, of course, is hydrogen gas, a highly flammable element whose atoms combine to form helium atoms in a process called nuclear fusion, which in turn gives off massive amounts of radiant energy.  In the Holy Qur’an, God speaks of this glowing sun: {And (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments, (12) And placed (therein) a dazzling lamp (i.e. the sun)?} [Al-Naba’, 78:12-13].  The Arabic word used in this verse for ‘lamp’ is (سراج) (“siraj”), which literally means ‘fuel lamp’. In other words, just like our sun, it uses fuel to provide us with heat and light!  But how could someone like the Prophet (peace be upon him) have so accurately described this feature of our planet’s sun more than 1400 years ago?
